Types of Stucco

Modern Stucco is a cement plaster that is commonly used as an exterior wall covering. It maintains high durability & weather resistant qualities while preserving a classy and aesthetic appeal. While Traditional Stucco siding has been utilized for hundreds, synthetic stucco systems were introduced in the 1950s.

Traditional stucco siding is made of a mixture of Portland Cement, sand, lime, and water. A three-coat mixture is applied over a lath base or a synthetic mesh, and a final acrylic finish is applied. The benefit of the acrylic finish is that it has colour, meaning there is no painting required. It can also be maintained with pressure wash cleaning as required. Given the flexibility of the acrylic finish, it is proven to have less potential of cracking.

Stucco is one of the most common forms of siding installation. The application method involves spreading the stucco mixture over a wooden lath or a wire. The stucco offers an acrylic polymer-like finish. It also expands and contracts according to the weather conditions, making it an ideal finish for places with extreme weather conditions like Canada. Due to the flexibility of the material, cracking is rare and it can often last for 50-60 years.

Traditional stucco doesn’t absorb as much water as synthetic stucco and it fares well against the elements, holding up against dents and dings from hailstones, wind, debris etc. It is also fire resistant and provides a great barrier to sound.

Stucco is far superior to common clapboard or wooden siding. All types of stucco offer endless possibilities when it comes to decoration and design. In addition, stucco is known for being a low-maintenance and cost-effective alternative to traditional siding materials.
